The trip home is reasonably quick, with most of the inhabitants of London still stuck in the pub or congregating outside kebab shops rather than on the road.
âEadie might still be up,â says Brenda, seeing light sneaking through the sitting room curtains.
Without being sure, they enter the house quietly, both of them staying mum until Julian whispers, âGoodnight,â when heâs already halfway up the stairs.
Brenda waves, rather than saying anything and turns towards the sitting room door. Putting her ear to it, sheâs rewarded with the sound of a page being turned.
Knocking gently to give advance warning sheâs about to enter, Brenda drops all pretence of quiet when she opens the door and walks into the sitting room.
âBoy, oh boy, was tonight interesting,â she says, as yet unsure if sheâll let Eadie in on the Wallace segment of the eveningâs entertainment. With luck, Rosie and Brianâs engagement will be enough to put the old lady off the scent.
Half an hour of non-stop chatter later and Brenda makes noises about going to bed.
âDid you see Wallace?â says Eadie, causing Brenda to mutter, âShit,â to herself.
âI heard that!â
Following a cross-examination that would have done Perry Mason proud, Brenda gives in and rattles off her adventures, even covering the urn-toppling stunt.
âThe bloody todger is still pulling the same stupid malarkey! Iâm so pleased youâve decided to give up on that hare-brained scheme of yours to get my works back.â
Rather than contradict Eadie and risk giving herself away, Brenda gives a noncommittal âHmmmm hmmmmâ in response.
âYouâre lucky you swapped drinks.â
Even with a fairly good idea, Brendaâs morbid curiosity gets the better of her. âWhy?â
âBecause about now youâd be waking up in the altogether in his dungeon, complete with hidden audience.â
âAudience?â says Brenda, revulsion skittering up her spine.
âYou think thatâs bad?â says Eadie, ignoring the comment about an audience, âHeâd have been naked, too.â
âAnd Iâd be kneeing the bastard so hard in the goolies, heâd be wearing them like a sodding bowtie!â
âTricky when youâre chained up.â
Brendaâs still thinking on a solution to this conundrum that doesnât involve an acetylene torch, when Eadie continues. âIt was having an audience that I didnât like, even if I was the one dishing out the punishment.â
âWell, hang on, if thereâs an audience, I can just yell for help.â Brenda allows herself to relax again.
âHardly, when theyâve paid to see just that.â
âBut surely â¦â Brenda pauses while considering other avenues of potential rescue.
âNo help from that quarter. Any chap in a viewing room will stay quiet because the only way theyâre allowed in there is if Wallace has something on them. No, youâd be on your own as far as help goes.â
